This occurs on the standard PlayStation 4 version, but dropping from a higher frame-rate makes it even more obvious on the Pro. There are also many hitches when entering new zones. When we tested the PC version of Dark Souls III at the time, both the GTX 970 and R9 390 could hit 60FPS when paired with a decent CPU, thus we assume the RX 470 and RX 480 (the closest thing we have the PlayStation 4 Pro GPU) should be able to achieve a similar level of performance. In short, what From Software has done with PlayStation 4 Pro is to remove the frame-rate limiter and let the game run free until it finds any bottleneck, either in the CPU, in the GPU, in the bandwidth of memory or even storage. In very constricted areas, or when you look at the sky, it is possible that the theoretical maximum of 60FPS is reached (the game uses vertical synchronization, so it cannot go above that figure), but when you play it is almost never reached. The frame-rate does increase from the 30FPS that it had on PlayStation 4 to something that, on average, is around 45FPS.

That being the case, what we get is exactly what the patch notes promise, no more, no less. Based on our reviews of the PC version, improvements to the existing code would be limited, because at launch the PlayStation 4 version only lagged behind when it came to shadow quality and motion blur, and this second section was previously improved to match it to the PC. Months later From Software has finally updated the game to take advantage of PlayStation 4 Pro as part of the new version 1.11. In fact, when the PlayStation 4 Pro was still known as Neo, Dark Souls III and Bloodborne were already two of the most desired titles within the list of possible patches for the new and powerful Sony console.
